Carlos E. Ugalde-Loo was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He is Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University. He is presently Deputy Director of the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) and member of the Promotions Panel of the School of Engineering.

Prof Ugalde received the BSc degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM, Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education), Mexico City, Mexico (2002), the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN, National Polytechnic Institute), Mexico City, Mexico (2005), and the PhD degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK (2009).

His research interests and academic expertise include modelling and control of dynamic systems (including energy systems), power system stability and control, grid integration and control of renewables, and DC technologies. He actively contributes to the 'Power Electronics and HVDC', ‘Smart Grids’ and 'Energy Infrastructure' research groups. He has supervised 18 PhD students to completion and is very active disseminating research through conference and journal papers. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles — several in top-tier Transactions-grade journals.

Prof Ugalde has been PI or Co-I of over 20 projects funded by CEU, EPSRC and the industry. He was Cardiff's PI for the CEU FP7 project BEST PATHS — a large consortium with 40 partners from 11 European countries. He leads two Innovate UK KTP projects: the first one modernising and improving the operation of cooling systems through the inclusion of cold stores, and the second one looking at the design, manufacture and testing of domestic thermal stores suitable for commercialisation for heating and cooling applications.

Prof Ugalde is a well-rounded academic member of staff recognised not only for his research but also for his excellence in teaching. He has received four 'Teaching of the Year Awards in recognition of excellence in teaching' and was a finalist in 2018 for a 'Celebrating Excellence Awards for Excellence in Teaching'.
