Meysam Qadrdan is an EPSRC-UKRI Innovation Fellow and Professor of Energy Networks and Systems at Cardiff University. Before joining Cardiff as a Lecturer in January 2015, he spent one year at Imperial College and two years at Cardiff University as Research Associate.
Prof Qadrdan obtained his PhD from Cardiff University, UK (2012), MSc in Energy Systems Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran (2008) and BSc in Physics from Ferdowsi University, Iran (2005). He also worked as an Energy Consultant for two years prior to moving to Cardiff to pursue his PhD degree.
His research area covers expansion and operational planning of interdependent energy networks at different scales from community to national level. Prof Qadrdan develops optimisation and simulation modelling tools to investigate:
Cross-sectoral flexibility to support the operation of low carbon power systems.
Interactions between gas, electricity and heat supply systems.
Expansion planning of energy infrastructure under uncertainty.
Whole-system impacts of heat decarbonisation pathways.
Prof Qadrdan is the PI of the £850k EPSRC project “Integrated heating and cooling networks with heat-sharing-enabled smart prosumers” and deputy lead of Energy Systems for Heat theme in UKERC 4. He has been Co-I of the H2020 projects MAGNITUDE (774309) and VPP4Islands (957852), the NERC-funded project ‘Sustainable Gas Pathways for Brazil’ (NE/N018656/1) and the FLEXIS project. In addition to fundamental research and academic projects, he works closely with key stakeholders in industrially-led projects on energy systems integration and hydrogen. He led a Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) project that focuses on the infrastructure implications of decarbonising the heat sector in South Wales using hydrogen and electricity. This is part of the Zero2050 South Wales initiative (zero2050.co.uk) led by National Grid.
Prof Qadrdan is an Associate Editor of IET Energy Systems Integration journal.
